UPDATE ON NINJA

Ninja is doing well, he is walking a bit, and his “pooper” is working.  He was going to the vet every 2nd day for a re-check, to ensure that infections were not setting in, but all is good and no longer necessary.  Dr. Sidhu calls Ninja a “miracle”, because from his injuries it was determined that he was not hit by a car, but caught inside the motor, a very lucky kitty.

Jesse built Ninja a new enclosure that will be his home for the next few months while he recovers from his broken leg. It allows him to stretch and walk about (no jumping). It has everything any kitty would need, a litter box, food, a scratching post, comfy blankets, a bed, and most importantly a hangout spot for his brother Moemoe, where they can smell and see each other.

He is the road to recovery!

FOR COOKIE ….. thank you for your support!

Cookie 2

Cookie, aka Cookie Dough, just turned 4 on Monday!  She had a super birthday being spoiled with toys and treats, and a comfy Maggie May blanket.  Cookie was rescued from the SPCA, and has been a loving member of her new family since she was 4 months old. The fabric originally selected was a black paw print, but this was vetoed by their daughter who selected a bright and happy pink theme, but we snuck the paw print on the back anyhow.

When we saw the order come through from our website, it was extra special, because it was from Eva’s niece…..to know that family is behind what we do means so much!

UPDATE ON NINJA

11425762_907233502668449_1886039821417125743_n

Ninja was released from the hospital today and is now home, but it will be a tough road ahead of him.  The surgery on his leg went well, but it will be a few months before it heals, so Ninja will have to be contained to avoid him re-breaking it ….. that means no jumping!  Sadly, Ninja’s tail had to be amputated, as the skin around his tail and rear was torn away too much. His sphincter muscles were damaged by the accident and he has been pooping constantly since before the surgery, let’s hope it heals as well.

Ninja was not too happy yesterday, but he is now with those that love him most ….. Moemoe, his brother, and his very caring Dad, Jesse. We had a surprise for Ninja when he arrived home today, a bright and cheery Maggie May blanket that he can snuggle into while he recovers and to share with Moemoe.

We will keep you updated on Ninja’s progress!

MEET NINJA ….. OUR NEWEST RECIPIENT FROM THE MAGGIE MAY FUND

4765212_1432992940_0558

Ninja is an adventurous 2 1/2 year old, and means everything to his Dad ….. here is his story.

2 years ago, Jesse’s friend was having a lot of trouble, her life was in shambles, and Jesse  was going through some of the worst depression of his life. She gave Ninja and his 1 month old foster brother, Moemoe to Jesse. Jesse took care of them while she was sorting out her life, and after 2 months, she told Jesse that they have bonded with him, and should stay with him.  He could rename them if he liked, as they were Jesse’s babies now.  Ninja’s original name was Poo Poo.  That was slightly changed and added as his middle name, referencing the Dragon Ball Z character, Mr. Popo, a black coloured Ninja.

Ninja is a super loving and friendly cat.  Usually he sleeps curled up cuddling in the crook of Jesse’s arm, or huddled under the blankets laying on top of him.  He is a master climber, his brother and him were raised climbing up and around a giant robe Jesse had, looking akin to squirrels running around a tree.  They both love to hang out on shoulders.

Ninja enjoys climbing to the very tops of trees, to get the best view. Ninja has been seen climbing trees that almost any other cat would get stuck in.  He hangs onto the trunk and makes tiny hops in a circle going down while looking up, once he is low enough, he just jumps down.

A few nights ago, Ninja was out prowling the neighbourhood and as Jesse went just outside the front door, he saw him laying down, looking like he had sat in something red.  Jesse went over to see him, when he moved to say Hi in return, Jesse was met with a screech of pain.  He saw the injuries on him and called the Central Park Animal Hospital.

Despite it being 3am, Dr. Sidhu rushed from his home to open the clinic for him.  Jesse gathered up Ninja and took him down immediately.  Dr. Sidhu stabilized him and listened to Jesse’s pleas about it being the end of the month, being on a fixed income due to disability and having nearly no way to pay for his procedures.  Ninja was pulled through the engine of a car, based on his injuries.  His tail is losing 2-3 inches from damage, and his rear end had a hole the size of a hand and his femur was broken in two places.  It looked pretty bad.

Ninja was kept safe at the vet clinic while Jesse borrowed money and asked around for any help he could get.  Jesse managed to raise $200 to pay for antibiotics and for the care he was given, though this wasn’t even close to enough to perform surgery that he needed.  Despite all this, Dr. Sidhu still sewed up Ninja’s rear end.

Jesse talks fondly of Dr Sidhu …. “he worked with me the entire time I was trying to locate credit or funding until we managed to work something out and after some great work with “In Memory of Maggie May” and “Animal Emergency Care Fund”, enough of the cost was covered to allow the procedure to go forward”.

The good news …. Ninja is scheduled for surgery, he will be getting a small part of his tail removed, along with repairing his broken leg.  Jesse has been hanging out at the vets office every day to spend time with Ninja and was also given the OK to bring in his brother Moemoe to visit him before surgery.  Jesse says “everyone who has worked with me to get through this has been amazing.  I love my cats more than anything else in the world.  They keep me going when I have nothing left.  I am eternally grateful to all those who have allowed me to keep my baby”.

We are so glad we have been able to be there for Ninja, Jesse and Moemoe ….. we will keep you updated!

MEET ELIJAH – OUR NEWEST RECIPIENT FROM THE MAGGIE MAY MEMORIAL FUND

Elijah loving the flowers (2a)

Elijah is 13 years old and his Mom, Maria describes Elijah as a “very special being”, “an angel disguised as a cat”. Elijah means everything to Maria …. he is her only family here.

Two months before Elijah would come into Maria’s life she kept having recurring dreams about a little black kitten. Then one day, while visiting a dear friend who happens to be a highly esteemed healer and elder in the Fort Langley First Nations Community, the family mentioned they had a little black kitten that they wished to gift to her.  He showed her the litter of kittens, and picked out Elijah for Maria. It was truly an honour, but more amazing was that Elijah was the same kitten she saw in her dreams.  On the long drive home Elijah and Maria bonded, she says it was like two old friends, reuniting.

Elijah has been Maria’s comfort during tough times and has seen her go through it all, but  Elijah has had his moments too, such as being attacked by male ferral cats, and chased up a tree by a bear. For 3 days he would not come down, finally armed with a backpack, Maria had to place the ladder on the roof of the house to reach Elijah. Elijah jumped into Maria’s arms with relief. Elijah was shaking from the cold, but Maria held him close to her heart for hours and hours, to warm him up. To this day, she says, when he smells a bear in the yard he will not even sit on the window sill for days on end, he is so scared. Maria says “we’ve seen each other go through so much – and always it has been Elijah that is there for me, and I am there for him”.

Elijah has a beautiful way of helping other cats that are either ill, or not doing well. He brings them into the yard – and shows them all the flowers, and shares all his favorite herbs with them. Maria’s neighbors often say, “Wow, my cat is now so much less scared and more cheerful since meeting Elijah”. People will often say how at peace they feel being around him. Elijah loves being around flowers. He loves smelling them, and laying underneath them. Elijah loves fresh papaya and begs for it, if you can believe that ! Elijah and Maria love to play Hide-and-Seek, they have been playing this game for 13 years. Elijah doesn’t like fancy cat-toys. He’s very down to earth. Mostly, he loves playing hide and seek, sometimes chasing string, or listening to a CD of Dolphin & Whale sounds, it’s his favorite music!

Elijah was diagnosed with severe Osteitis and Osteomyelitis, and surgery was needed quickly to save his life.  We are pleased to report that Elijah’s surgery was a success and recovering at home.  Maria writes “The best thing of all, is that he got the miracle of the surgery, which saved his life.  That is the best gift of my life”

We are proud to have been able to financially help Elijah and will keep you updated on his progress.

MEEA IS GOING HOME TO RECOVER AFTER HER 2ND SURGERY

20141222_213133 (2)a

Meea has gone through quite the ordeal over the past few weeks. In early May she had her first surgery of two to remove tumors from her ears and to do a total ear canal ablation.  The first surgery went well until she had to be rushed back to hospital with a ruptured eye, fortunately with medication and treatment, the eye did not have to be removed, and the ulcer had since disappeared. All the test results came back OK from the first surgery. The second surgery went well with no complications other than the issues with her eyes again, but it’s being watched carefully.  Meea is eating, more alert and not so wobbly this time. She will be going home tonight, and a quick recovery is expected. The family extends their gratitude to every one that donated to Meea’s care.

FOR MEEA …..

We had a surprise for Meea!  We delivered Meea her Maggie May blanket to Boundary Bay Hospital so she would have her special blanket to snuggle into as she recovers from surgery. Meea is a fighter and very much loved by her family, but it has been an emotional roller coaster ride for them all and for us too.  We have been in contact with the Hospital and the family.  The surgery was a success, a few issues, but a very positive prognosis, an additional night in hospital was needed as precaution. Meea went home on Thursday, groggy, but feeling better to be at home. Friday night, Meea was rushed back to the hospital with a ruptured eye, and another night in hospital. The suggestion that the eye may have to be removed was overwhelming, but nothing for sure until the specialist could examine her on Saturday evening. The good news is that the Optomologist says that with the medication and treatment she was receiving, no eye surgery is needed, and Meea could go home. Today, we are happy to report that Meea with her big brown eyes is doing well, she is more alert, her eye is looking ok, and she’s pooping and peeing ….. words that any pet mom just loves to hear!

We are dedicating this years quilt to all animal lovers, whether you are in the medical field, rescue, advocate, locate, or just love and care for your pet.

We started the tradition last year with our 1st Anniversary Quilt. We called it “Gratitude”, in recognition of all the support we had received. We raffled it off on October 11, and raised $603 for the Maggie May fund.

We are doing it again, we have the fabric picked out, it will be different, but we will still somehow, someway, include the fabrics and pets that have ordered a blanket this past year. We will once again, raffle it off on October 11, which is the anniversary of Maggie’s crossing over the rainbow bridge. We are excited to get started on it and will provide more details later.

COOPER IS STILL LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME

Cooper photo 3 Cooper photo 2 Cooper photo 4

UPDATE – Cooper is doing great! The allergy tests are in, but while the environmental test reveals no concerns, and that Cooper is good with various pollens and grass, the food allergy test revealed allergies towards most grains and vegetables. No potatoes at all, Cooper is now eating lamb and a few vegetables only. His Dad says ” I think he’s eating better than I am”. It may take a bit longer being on this diet before his system flushes out, but his condition is improving. He has been on some longer hikes and is loving the outdoors!

Cooper continues to have his great personality, and thinks he is part cat as he loves to cuddle and stretch out on his Dad’s tummy! As hard as it is to give up your furry child, it is an honorable thing that his Dad is doing, he won’t let Cooper go to just anyone! Keep sharing, let’s find him his forever home!

MEET COOPER – affectionately called Mr. Super Duper Cooper!

With deep sadness, his owner is unable to provide Cooper the home that he deserves. He needs to find Cooper a new home, but it is very important that he finds the right family, one that Cooper will love, and one that will love Cooper right back. He says … “I will be very sad the day it happens but know it’s for his highest good”. Cooper is 5 years old and has an amazing personality. He is a happy go lucky dog that loves attention and people. He definitely has a stubborn streak….he is a pug! He loves food, he loves to give kisses, and he loves to be at ones ankles…..he is a pug! He is fully house and crate trained and knows a couple of basic commands. Cooper’s interactions with other dogs is good, maybe a bit timid at first, and he gets along with cats. His owner is in favour of a trial run just to make sure it’s the right fit for all involved. Cooper does have some additional medical needs that will need to continue to be addressed and has received amazing care at Healing Paws in Port Moody. He recommends that anyone thinking Cooper would be the right fit for them, that the family discuss Coopers needs with their veterinarian.

If you feel your family could be the right fit for Cooper and are ready to give this sweetie a wonderful home, please email us at: maggiemay99@telus.net for further information.
